Resave PDF

This quick fix resaves the whole PDF document.

The quick fix offers a number of properties controlling how the save process is handled:

  1. "PDF document version"
Controls what happens with the PDF document version during the save process. By default, the current PDF version is retained during the operation. Alternatively, the save process can upgrade the PDF document to a later document version.

While this may make sense, it is important to note that changing the PDF document version does not change the features used in the PDF document. So, changing the document version to 2.0 for example, doesn't actually optimize the PDF document to use PDF 2.0 specific functionality.
  2. "Repair image streams"
When this check box is activated, pdfToolbox attempts to correct image streams in the document that may not be compliant with the PDF syntax rules.

Fixing image problems

PDF document can contain embedded images. These are typically embedded as "streams". Different compression and encoding mechanism are used to keep the size of the embedded images as small as possible.

In some cases, the application that creates the PDF document may not embed them correctly, or may embed images that are already non-compliant without being able to fix those issues. As a result, the PDF document could either not display correctly, not print correctly, or both.

As an example, a small number of PDF files exported from Canva exhibited a problem with embedded JPEG images in early 2026. This quick fix can fix those issues, if the "Repair image streams" check box is activated.
